Melody: Outside

  • Start a phrase inside, go outside in the middle and end the phrase inside again.
  • Try moving up or down a halfstep.
  • Try moving up or down a tritone.
  • Use chromatics.
  • Play interval sequences.
  • Play scales (e.g. pentatonics) that don’t fit the chord.
  • Play the same mode but from another root.
  • Play through interval cycles (e.g. Minor third).
  • Play random chord progressions not related to the original chord.
  • Transpose a motive randomly into different keys.
  • Negative scales, Negatives of all the structures.
  • Play exact sequences, shift motive exactly by certain intervals.
